Lebowskis is a musician led organisation dedicated to presenting innovative original music made by the best and brightest Melbourne jazz and improv musicians. It’s all about the music. We aim to present a wide range of musical performances with an ethos of complete artistic freedom in a non stuffy, people friendly listening space.
We have a firm emphasis on promoting creative projects led by exceptional musicians in the early stages of forging a career in music working alongside some of the country’s most seasoned performers.
Conceived in 2004 by musicians Eugene Ball and Stephen Magnusson, Lebowskis first residence was Friday nights at the Fitzroy Bowling Club followed by Mondays at Bar 303 and now Sunday afternoons 5-7pm at the historic Moreland City Band Hall in East Brunswick.
Lebowkis is run by a mutli generational board of volunteers and has made strong connections with Melbourne music institutions, VCA & Monash Uni, Melbourne Poly Technic and PBS Community Radio.
A unique element of Lebowskis is its concept of band development residencies, launching in 2016. These residencies are available to bands that apply, with the aim of developing and strengthening a unique creative project over six months. Successful applicants will be awarded three performances and three workshop sessions over a six month period, with each concert intended to showcase the bands’ development of their concept. Successful bands are encouraged to support other bands in the residency, promoting a collective community of developing unique creative conceptions.
